Disney Princess Movie Theatre!

Here is another Disney cover I did for the Movie Theater collection. This one is Disney Princess based! You can guess how high my excitement was when I was assigned this cover! :)

So here is my first trail run with the Projection Cover.

Editor's Notes:
-Move Belle into the foreground
-The Projector: Switch the colors of pink and purple.
Body of the Projector turn to Pink and the looking glass and button to Purple.
-Include all 3 girls on the projection sticker.
-Instead of a rectangle and a white stroke around the child change it to a vignette oval with a soft outer glow.
-The sellsheet sticker's (the sticker over the blister) purple stroke is very dark.
-My editor loved the two tone gradient I created for the projector sticker. So I need to incorporate that same gradient style to the sellsheet.

This is the finalized Cover.

My Personal Editing:
-Since we moved Belle in the foreground I decided to move Ariel higher on the page and also Enlarge Cindy (so Belle dips in the center of the page).
-I Enlarged and duplicated the stars on the side bar to pop. I feel this tactic would allow your eyes to move horizontally across the page.
-I chose to use a magenta stroke around the sell sheet and flipped the gradient two tone pink. (The center is darker and the outer circle is lighter). That way the text will not get lost in the design.

Overall this one is on the top of my list for Disney Covers. On Tuesday( August 7th, 2012) Reader's Digest will discuss with Disney's UK branch about the covers in a meeting!

Animal Friends Movie Theater Cover

Here is another Movie Theatre Cover for the book Disney Animal Friends Movie Theater. This book is about all of Disney's Animal friends. Here kids can read several character stories such as Simba, Nemo, and Balu and follow along with a fun slide show movie projector. This book as a total of 20 slides.

Cover:
This cover was such a challenge to me as a designer because of the mass amount of characters. Some animals came from the land while the others lived in the deep blue sea.

The Goal:
Was to make each character fit together as a single design and unit.
My first design I incorporated an ocean on the top of the page and a jungle scene along the bottom section of the cover.

Editor's Notes:
-The backgrounds were far too busy and we lost sight of the characters.

Final Design:
I created a gradient background of blue to a bright green. But the one issue I had was I felt that the characters were just floating in space. So to break the free form I added a few leaves and blended them into the green. While for the ocean section on the top, I added a few fun bubbles.

Noah's Ark Play and Pop Up Book

So my assignment this week was to help design several spreads and sticker sheets for a new Christian book called Noah's Ark Play and Pop Up Book. Here kids will go through the Biblical story of Noah's Ark with fun interactive stickers and an added plus it is in pop up!

Here are two sticker sheets that will be used for this book.

Sticker Sheet Guidelines:
- 2mm space between the art work and the die line
-3mm space between each sticker
- 2 mm bleed.

This is always very difficult because you are dealing with a lot of size and spacing. It was like playing Tetris. If the measurements are not correct we could lose the client entirely! I decieded to create a small circle that was 7 mm and put them in between the images of the page. This helped me stay ontop of the space and stay clear of the bleed.

Overall this was fun to complete!

Nativity Covers Finalized.

UK DISNEY PROJECTOR COVERS

I was assigned to design several Disney covers for the UK stores and offices.
COVERS: Mickey Mouse Club House Movie Theater, The Lion King Movie Theater, Marvel's The Mighty Avenger's Movie Theater, Brave Movie Theater.

The book covers are more vertical in comparison to the United States versions.  On the right side of the covers is a :
Movie projector
A blister packet and sticker, containing 5 movie projector disks.
20 Images for each book!

So when the child reads the story he can see certain movie scenes come to life on his/her wall.

Here is the Brave Movie Theater. The top image was my first design.
This design shows more of the archery range and castle in the distance.

The New Brave Cover is I moved the Archery range and centered the castle and the title.

Fisher Price Box Display

I was assigned to design a box display for Fisher Price. Box displays tend to be bought in bulk for shelves by clients like : Costco, Sam's Club, TJMaxx, Target and other stores. The image below is my first draft.

The display was originally meant for the Easter Holiday.

Editor Notes#1:
Move the Zoo books down on the lower level
Move the Noah's Arks books in the lower left hand corner
Shrink the White circle Logo
Remove the $8.99 price

Version #2:
My Editor's and the Reader's Digest marketing team decided to divided my box set in half, and instead of a holiday theme we went with the generic.

Here is the final result. This project was very fun and interesting because I had to look at the different perspectives and had to think of how it would look like on a shelf.

Marvel Avenger's Movie Flip Book

I was assigned to design a lot of the content for the Marvel Avenger's Movie Flipbook. This book is based off the movie.

Assignment:
Design 1 inside cover
Design the dicuts for the flip book
Design 2 spreads of story
2 Flipbooks: 144 pages of screen grabs from the film.

This is a mock up dummy of the flip book I made. This book is a total of 72 pages. In this scene there is a group of cars exploding in the street. This entire clip is 4 seconds long.

(Right) I designed an inside cover for the Marvel Avenger's Flip Book. There will be 3 individual character stories (Ironman,Hulk, and Thor) inside of the book.
This was my first spread design. Each page only had a single sentence of text so instead of creating a text box or doing text wrap around the image I created a rectangular shape with a cut edge. I did this because I wanted to make my design cohesive.

Editor's reviews #1:
-Change the red to a brighter shade.
-Turn the font to double Black
-On page 4 move the red bar to the right side of the page vertically.

Editor's Review #2:
-Change the red to a bright gold/yellow.

This is the finished look for my Ironman Spread.

(left side) The left side is the inside page of the book. Here I deiced to go with the Avenger's logo. (Right side) is my spread. The white space will be a dicut.

Nativity Box Part 4

So here is the play set with the press out figurines. I propped this up inside my work cubical. It is really cool to see this gift set come to life!

Editors Notes:
1) To move the Shepard in the inner pages towards the right
2) Enlarge the boy and the dog by 10% (to match the size of the press-outs)

Character Press-outs

Here is an example of a single page of character press outs. This was sort of difficult because according to legal rights we are only allowed to use a certain amount of space for each sheet. Also we are not allowed to place the images too close to one another. It was like play tetris!

Editors Notes:
1) Make the stands for each character longer and more like a horizontal bar. This will make them easier to stand.

EX: Mary.

A dicut character up close. This is an example of folding the corners!

Nativity Box Part 3

Here is the inside of my Nativity scene(properly put into place). As you can see the background bleeds all around the inner corners of the box.

Editor's Notes #1:
1) Lower the Star
2) Edit the hills by raising them (to allow them to bleed better onto the next scene)

Here is a front view of the box playset.

Nativity Box Part 2

(left)Here is the layout I designed for the inside of the boxset. This will be the backdrop for the Nativity scene. I decided to keep it spacious and simple due to the age bracket of children of 4-6. Also in the foreground the press-outs will be played in the front. The surrounding frames will be bleed around the inner corners of the box, allowing the  plastic casing to fit as well.

(right) Over here is the inside flap that will be displayed when you open the mock book. Here I decided to create a dessert scene in the background (which consists of sheep, rolling hills, Shepards, and a beautiful city in the distance and a blue starry sky.) In the foreground is a boy with his dog and and a green bush. The bush was purposely placed in the right corner because I designed it so it would bleed into the foreground into the Nativity stage.

The Next step of this process is to print and insert my art work into the box.

Nativity Treasure Box Sketches

Using tracing paper I sketched several thumbnails in sharpie for book cover ideas for the Nativity box set.

Nativity Treasure Gift Box Set Part 1

I was assigned to do a gift set box all based around the story of when Jesus was born.

It will be a great gift to children because it comes with:
1 story book
1 activities book
2 sheets of stickers
2 sheets of press outs

So I had to design a Dummy: A mock box/books , to be send off to several companies. This project will go to a publishers meeting on July 13th in Florida (the of of this week).

My job was to design:
Sticker Sheets
Character Press outs
Design Colored Cover and 15 page spreads of book #1
Design a B/W Cover with also a 15 page spreads for book#2. This will be consist of Christmas Games,Puzzles,Mazes, Word searches etc.
Entire Treasure Box Design (Front Cover, Spine,Back cover, Inside Box (Nativity play set), Inner Flap, and Pages (thickness of mock book)

As you can see below this is the proper measurements for the dummy.

Flip Clips Books

So this week I was assigned the job to design Flip Clips covers!

These covers were 10 x 10 inches that will be dicut (creating holes) that will display the flip books inside.
I designed a total of 2 covers for two individual companies (Nickelodeon and Hasbro) and this was presented to Simon & Schuster on Tuesday.

This is my sketch for The My Little Pony Flip Clips. I deiced to use one of the background designs for a spread from the My Little Pony Wedding in Canterlot. Here I drew onto of the image, I decied to crop off most of the ground making the main focus to be the sky.

Layout Breakdown:
After doing a ton of research on the project I think its safe to say that I understand the concept of My Little Pony.  (Left side is my sketch darkened)
Since my main focus was to be on the sky I wanted the ponies to really pop against the blue. In my layout I deiced to have all the ponies placed against one another on the left side of the cover.

In the top corner I chose to have the flying ponies near the clouds and then the others surrounding the dicuts, all facing inward. On the right side of the page is the created clouds (using the pen tool in Adobe illustrator and building a mask to cover the rest of the art). Inside each cloud I took a scene from the movies or the ebooks and filled the clouds (Hasbro has the final say which scenes we get to use). At the top center page I took the My Little Pony logo from our Style guide and placed it in the center of the page. I also thought of typography and decided to go with the font called Hopeless Heart (the blue sticky note). This font is mainly used for interior spreads and back covers.

There is the original 6: (From Left to right) Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Blast,Rarity, Twilight, Applejacks, and Fluttershy.

Monday Cover Reviews:
Cover review is a large meeting that consists of all the graphic designers, art directors, and creative directors, and marketing team. Here it is just like Herring's class critiques!!! Which was very cool! I pitched my covers and literally wrote on my artwork and took in their advise. Not only did I learn how to think of the cover from an artistic perspective but also financially.

On the left is a finalized design of The MLP Flip Clips book. Here this project was presented to Simon & Schuster and Hasbro on Tuesday.

Layout Breakdown:
The second cover I designed was for Spongebob Squarepants! Here I took the same layout design from the My Little Pony Flip Clip. From a marketing persepective if we harness the same elements of the cover we can apply it to several differnt clients. EX: The Avengers, Dora the Explorer, Seasame Street, Barbie, Hello Kitty...etc.

On the right is my sketch for Spongebob. I put a sheet of tracing paper and placed it over another cover created by our lead cartoonist and senior design David.

This book cover is going to be 10 x 10 inches. In the top left hand corner I will place the Nickelodeon logo and also the Spongebob Squarepants logo.

Along the left side of the page will be Spongebob, Patrick, and Plankton. On the right side of the page will be the dicuts of fun water blurbs( here I designed the blurbs in Adobe Illustrator with the pen tool and masked the rest of the remaining art).

During Cover review on Monday we as a team decided to change up the bottom line tagline of the book. Originally it was 6 Spongebob Stories, but now it is 6 Spongy Stories!

Cover 1 Editing:
Here is my first design. After receiving advise from my art directors I had to go back and revise several things to the cover.

Things to Edit Part 1:
Find a new image of plankton
Edit the flip pages in the lower corner by having the orange wrap fully around it.

Cover 2 Editing:

Here is the notes from my second visit. Together we discussed what needed to be fixed and what would really make this cover pop!

Things to Edit Part 2:
Flip Plankton
Mask Arm
Brighten background with a higher % of Cyan
Flip Stroke colors green and purple
Fix pages and curve stroke.

Cover Editing Part 3:
Here I followed the instructions but added a few new elements of my own.

New Additions:
So I decied to remove Plankton entirely, because without Patrick or any other side characters it seemed rather odd. Secondly I decieded to add a Cyan blue line with Spongebob stepping over it. As for Spongebob's arm if everyhing goes well with Nickolodeon they will assign an artist to draw in a new arm (so it looks like Sbob is holding up the dicut purple blurb). And Example of what we are thinking of is on the image above. Next to my doodle Skeleton.
